New Boss

I met my new boss yesterday and she is wonderful.  I am very excited to work with her.  From our talks yesterday and today, it really sounds like she's got nice ideas for the organization and I can't wait to see where she takes us.  Tomorrow, we are having a meet and greet lunch in Columbia and I'm riding up there with a couple other ladies from the Charleston area.  I love a good road trip.  =)

Thunder-phobe!

My poor Daisy is a total thunder-phobe.  She was worse when we were living in our old apartment, I think it was because we were on the third floor so everything was amplified.  Well, it's been a VERY long time since we've had a thunderstorm, I'm talking some time last year, so when we had one last night, she freaked out! She gets the shakes.  I have to take her to the hall bathroom because it's the one room in the house where you can't really hear the pounding rain, can barely hear the thunder, and can't see the lightning.  It's her fall-out shelter.  And because she hates to sit or lay on a hard surface, inside or outside, I have to pull out the bath mat so she can sit.

I took this picture with my cell phone so it's not the best, but it pretty clearly illustrates my crazy dog.  A video would do better justice since it would show the shaking.  We have tried so many different techniques (recommended by the vet and others) to break her of this, but nothing really works.  We just treat her like a little princess until the storm passes and try our best to distract her.

Uh-oh... duty calls, I hear thunder!

Stand By Me

My wonderful husband recorded this morning's Today Show for me because of an interview Amy Robach (had to look that up, had no idea what her name was) did with the some of the cast and director of Stand By Me.  Rob Reiner (director), Will Wheaton (Gordie Lachance), Cory Feldman (Teddy Duchamp), Jerry O'Connell (Vern Tessio), and Richard Dreyfuss (narriator/adult Gordie) were all present.  It was pretty neat to see the three guys together after 25 years.  It looks like they still have a similar dynamic to what they had when the movie was filmed.  Of course, it wasn't complete without River Phoenix (Chris Chambers) and I was honestly kind of surprised Kiefer Sutherland (Ace Merrill) wasn't there.

Stand By Me is probably my number one favorite movie.  I have seen it over and over again since I was young.  It was made in 1986 and of course I doubt I saw it when I was five, but I'm sure my sisters showed it to me at a young age.  Young enough that when River Phoenix died in 1993 when I was eleven going on twelve, I cried, that was Chris Chambers who died!

I love the movie, I love the soundtrack (the whole thing, not just the theme song - I have the CD in my collection and it's also on my iPod), and I even read the novella the movie was based on, The Body by Stephen King.  I am a fan of Stephen King and most often find myself reading his shorter stories because his books are so long.  So I actually stumped upon this story in one of his books, not even realizing the association until I began reading it.

Long story short, it was really fun to see the cast together and I could still picture them as they were in the movie.  I actually haven't watched it in its entirety in quite some time, so I might just have to pull the DVD out and put it on!

Shred Update!

Today will be Day 9 of my 30 Day Shred.  So far I'm doing great and really feeling it! I do feel like it's making a difference, which is most important.  My endurance is picking up immensely and I'm able to do more for longer than I was in the first few days.  I did not do the Shred over the weekend and I was fully prepared to start back at Day 1 this past Monday, but when I did it on Monday, I felt good.  I didn't feel like I had regressed at all, so I'm just picking up where I left off.  My only woe at this time is that I have pain in my feet, I need to pick up some arch supports.  I don't feel the shin splints anymore, score! Other than that I'm doing great and working through the burn.  I'm really proud of myself for sticking it out this long.  I think this is the most consistent I've been with exercise in years.  I can't wait to check my measurements and stuff in a month, well in 20 days.  Saturday I will try Level 2.  I may have mentioned this in my previous post about the Shred, but I plan to do 10 days at each level, there are three total.  So Saturday will be Day 11 and that will start Level 2.  Hopefully I can do it! But if I can't I'll just keep at Level 1.  Something is better than nothing.  But I am going to push myself, I'm not letting myself off easy.  I know what I felt like on Day 1 and if Day 11 is the same or better than that, I'm good to go! After that, Day 21 will put me at Level 3.  Wish me luck!

Happy Birthday Donovan!

Saturday, March 19th, was a beautiful day. The perfect day for a four-year-old's birthday party! I was honestly a little nervous that them planning an outdoor party would result in rain, Murphy's Law, right? But it didn't rain, not a drop.

As we were setting up, Evelyn was running around, excitedly saying, "this is going to be the best party ever!"

Mat and Michele rented a jump castle obstacle course.  The kids had an absolute blast! If I'm being honest, so did the adults.  The guy dropped off the jump castle that morning and of course Michele and I had to try it out.  Man it was rough! Not even my 30 Day Shred could have prepared me for that work out.  I seriously have no idea how the kids were running through that thing repeatedly.  Oh wait, that's because they were hyped up on all the sugar! They also rented a cotton candy machine!

I made cupcakes and my mother-in-law, Patti, made the cake.  We had hot dogs and mini-hamburgers, chips and dip.  It was a really nice day and it was nice to see family and friends.

People: Mat, Michele, Brad, Me, Chris, Eric, Jeff, Brandi, Kat, Evelyn, Donovan, David, Jenn, Erin, Kandace, Rey, Aiden, Bobby, Patti, Dot, James, Julie, Grace, Tara, Brittney, Emmalynn, Aunt Barbara, Uncle Bobby, Payton, Lexi...

And of course the arrival of the Corbin's in town meant my favorite little puppy was here too! Emma grew just a little bit, her legs are a little longer and maybe her body too, but she's still a baby!! Can't wait to see her again.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

We had dinner tonight at my parents' house, corned beef and cabbage! One of my favorite holiday meals.

And I've completed day 4 of the Shred! Still getting a little sore here and there but the recovery is getting so much better.  I'm not sore as long anymore and I can do the workouts a little more consistently, without breaks.  Loving it!

Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred

I ordered this from Amazon about a week ago and I was finally ready to try it out yesterday.  I have a couple of girl friends who were doing it and they said it was great, so what the heck, right?

Brad and I both got into our work out garb, cleared the living room, and put the DVD in.  Not even kidding, by the time we had pushed the couches back and cleared some space, we were exhausted.  That goes to show how out of shape we are!

We started with Level 1, which is recommended when you're just starting out.  There are three levels in all.  Each level has three sets of 3-2-1 circuits, as well as a warm up and cool down.  Three minutes of strength, two minutes of cardio, then one minute of abs.  The cardio really kicked our butts! We definitely need to brush up on our cardio work outs! We did go for a late walk with the dog around 8:30 last night, a few hours after we worked out.  It was nice.

As much as I did not love peeling myself off the living room floor yesterday evening, I definitely want to do it again! I feel sore in my shoulders and thighs and that's good! It's not agonizing like I can't walk, so I know I didn't overexert myself.  It doesn't hurt enough to give me a valid excuse not to try it again.  Not sure if Brad will join me this evening, but I'm doing it one way or the other! I'm not going to see results if I don't work towards them!

So Jillian Michaels? I certainly wanted to smack the chick while I was doing the work out, but looking back on what she said, she's right.  You need to push yourself.  If you make it too easy, then you're not going to see results and you're just not going to try as hard.  At least that's the way it is with me.  My biggest problem is lack of consistency.  I'll do a workout DVD one day and then be sore the next day so I'll skip out.  The problem with that is that I never start again.  The DVD is about 27 minutes long I think, and I can devote 27 minutes a day to this easily.  If I can devote myself to 5 Criminal Minds reruns in a row, I can do this.  Piece of cake.

Today, I ordered her book, Winning by Losing.  And I also ordered her cookbook, Master Your Metabolism.  Her straight-forward, sock-it-to-me attitude is I think just what I need to get moving.

New Bedroom Furniture!

I think it kind of tells you where a person is in their life when they get so darn excited about new furniture.  Where am I? I am happily married, living in a home that I love, I have great friends and family... I'm at peace.

So, my parents and sister had shopped around town for a dresser for a spare bedroom in their house for my niece and nephew.  When I saw it I loved it and when I heard the price I loved it more! They had purchased it at Trader Joe's Furniture, no relation to the Trader Joe's food market, for just $169.99.  I couldn't believe it.  Out of all the times that Brad and I went looking for bedroom furniture, we never found a dresser like that for that price, not even at Target! Not to mention we never really found one we liked.  So I was hooked and just waiting on our tax money to arrive, and for me to find the time to make it to the store.

Trader Joe's is less than 5 minutes from my work, so I managed to get over there on Wednesday.  When my sister bought it, it was not in stock and had to ship.  I assumed this would be the case for me, but they had it in stock! I didn't even know they carried stuff in stock.  And... it was assembled! I purchased 2 (one for me and one for Brad) and had to go back yesterday to pick them up because I had the Kia and this was a job for the van.  So I picked them up and set them up last night.

I'm so excited! We replaced the two mismatched hand-me-down dressers that we had and our bedroom is coming together! We didn't trash those dressers, they're still in good shape, so we moved them each into our spare bedrooms.  Not yet sure if that was a good or bad idea since I'm sure I will now fill them up with stuff they don't need to be filled with.

After doing all that and cleaning up my bedroom, I was constantly staring at the eyesore of a TV stand we have in our bedroom.  It's about the size of a chest dresser, height and width, and the TV sits on top of it.  It really isn't a bad piece of furniture, but the wood tone is not right for the room.  Not everything that we have matches perfectly mind you... the headboard is dark metal, the nightstands are actually end tables from our living room that are dark wood, and the dressers are also dark wood - aside from the two dressers I purchased the other day and the two nightstands, nothing else is a part of a matching set.  But everything is dark and coordinates well with the other pieces in the room.  Except the TV stand.  Ugh.  Soo... today I went back to Trader Joe's and bought the chest dresser that goes with our set to replace the TV stand! Same price as the dressers and just as pretty.  We have some clothes, pants and pajamas and such, folded and stacked on the racks above our hanging clothes in the closet.  I figure we can move that stuff into this new dresser and get some extra space back in the closet.  The TV will be at the same height it has been all along, so all is well there.  And our room will totally match!

Update: I got the new dresser and it is pictured below! We put the eyesore out to the curb and someone took it within 5 minutes, not even kidding!

Side note: the lighting in these pics is awful! You can't really tell how pretty the blue walls are! Ugh.

Trivia, a Wedding, a Puppy, and Cracker Barrel!

That pretty much sums up our weekend! Friday night we did trivia with my parents and we did not win.  We did have a nice time though, as always.  Late Friday night, Michele, Mat, and Donovan got to our house with their puppy Emma! I think she is 9 weeks old, she's a boxer! So adorable.  Daisy and her got along ok and now I have puppy fever! She is so precious.  Love that puppy face!

Saturday we went to Scott and Mindy's wedding.  Scott is Brad's sister-in-law Brandi's twin brother.  It was at Old Santee Canal Park and it was very nice! The wedding was outside and the weather held out, thank goodness! The reception was in the interpretive center.  It was a really neat place and I'd like to visit again some time to really check things out.  For food, because you know I have to talk about the food, they had some pimento cheese crackers, ham biscuits, and crab dip for the cocktail hour.  Then for dinner there was pork tenderloin with a peach chutney sauce, shrimp and grits, tomato pie, potatoes au gratin, and mixed vegetables.  Everything was absolutely delicious! That evening, we took Evelyn back to our house and her and Donovan had a sleep over.

Sunday morning, Brad and I took Donovan to Cracker Barrel with Eric, Brandi, and Evelyn.  We have not had a chance to eat there yet and it was yummy! I forget the name of my breakfast, but it had bacon, eggs, sausage, ham, grits, a biscuit, and cinnamon apples! I love the cinnamon apples.  I should have taken pictures of all this food!

Daisy and Emma playing in the backyard...

Adorable puppy chewing on the Christmas tree that, yes, is still in our backyard!
For the record - Brad is disposing of it next weekend!

This is her totally pooped after her play session with Daisy.

The men: Donovan, Mat, Chris, and Brad!

Me and Brad outside the ceremony/reception.

I had taken more pictures, but I forgot to change the camera settings from indoor to outdoor so they didn't come out too good.  Total bummer.  I can't believe I didn't get a single picture of the bride and groom!

Bye bye playlist...

As much as we loved our playlist, it had to go.  Not because it was bothering us, but because it was starting to glitch and skip and sometimes it wouldn't even play.  So off it goes!
